Galore Creek Mine, British Columbia

Northern British Columbia 2006

As part of the feasibility study for the construction of a tailings dam, ECO as a sub-consultant to BGC Engineering, evaluated the feasibility of grouting to cut off the seepage below the dam at the contemplated site. ECO reviewed the data available from the geotechnical investigation and directed in-situ hydraulic conductivity tests in boreholes located under the foot-print of the future dam. This was followed by a small scale grouting program to determine the amenability of different types of grout and grout formulations to the formation. This in turn was used to provide recommendations and specifications regarding the design of the grout curtain. ECO assessed drilling methods, borehole preparation techniques, grout formulations, holes spacing, grout plant capacity, etc. and cost for the contemplated grouting program to minimize seepage through the rock fissures below the future structure to the required levels. The in-situ hydraulic conductivity tests and the grouting operation were monitored in real time using CAGES.
