Soil Grouting Through Sleeve pipes Enables Shaft Sinking in dry conditions, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee, Wisconsin
2000

Jay Dee Contractors, Inc. undertook the job of replacing the sludge lines below primary clarifiers at Jones Island Waste Water Treatment plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Shafts and box tunnels were to be excavated below the groundwater table in a silty sand backfill material. For environmental reasons no dewatering was permitted.

ECO was retained by Jay Dee Contractors to design and implement the grouting program with Jay Dee personnel.

  • Horizontal and vertical holes were drilled for the placement of sleeve pipes.
  • A grouted soil conglomerate wall was created around and below the excavation of each clarifier shaft and throughout the trajectory of the 4′ x 4′ box tunnel.
  • Regular cement/fly ash suspension grouts, microfine cement suspension grouts, and sodium silicate solution grouts were utilized in the grouting operation.
  • ECO was on site during all grouting operations to provide supervision and direction.
  • Equipment for monitoring the grouting program in real-time (CAGES) was supplied and operated by ECO.
