West Block Rehabilitation Project

Ottawa, Ontario, 2013

A grouting program was undertaken as part of a large rehabilitation project carried out at the west block of the Parliament Buildings located in Ottawa, Ontario.  The goal of the grouting program was to consolidate the rubble fill material and fill old conduits located below the foundations of the Mackenzie Tower in order to ensure the stability of the tower during the excavation of a the adjacent courtyard as part of the rehabilitation work.

ECO was retained by the specialty grouting contractor, MSE Drilling And Grouting Inc. to provide technical assistance and QA/QC control during the permeation grouting program.  ECO developed several site specific cement grout formulations to best treat the affected soil and rock formation.  Grout was injected into the target zones using a combination of sleeve pipes and multiple port sleeve pipe (MPSP) system.  The grouting operation was continuously monitored with CAGES (Computer Aided Grouting Evaluation System) real time monitoring system and the permeability of the subsurface was reduced to target values.
